Taking public transportation is the easiest and quickest way to get to know the heart of Trinidad. On the maxi taxis—small, cheap 10-passenger vans—you’ll see why Trinis pride themselves on being a true melting pot; the passengers on the maxi can range from the very young—children getting off from school, still in their uniforms—to the very old and there is always a mix of Afro-Trinis and Indo-Trinis. The maxis are also always blasting the radio, so you’ll catch the sound of this island as well, the energetic Soca music that sets the beat for this country.
The maxis are also indicative of the development of public works in Trinidad. There are no official stops and many maxis don’t have fares clearly posted. It’s not an organized system with clear route schedules, but it’s a system that works. And it seems to be improving as well, with brand new, larger maxis starting to appear and signs for junctions in larger cities.
