devils in trinidad

{Adam}

This weekend’s excursions included one to quite possibly the weirdest “lake” that I have ever seen. After about an hour drive through cities and towns down the West Coast of Trinidad, our esteemed taxi driver Roger pulled the car onto a driveway leading to what looked like, really, a natural parking lot. This site was the Pitch Lake, a naturally occuring deposit of pitch, the stuff used to make asphalt, car tires, rubber, and all sorts of other things. As we toured around the lake of pitch, we were informed that this crazy formation goes nearly 450 feet down into the ground, and that Germans just love to come swim in the water that sits on its surface. We learned that if you take a huge section of pitch out by tractor or crane, that within days its spot will be filled in. This “lake” was truly like nothing I had ever seen before, but really, where can you see a 450 ft. lake of asphalt in the US?
